IGN: So are these concept the natural evolution of the Super Mario franchise then? Yoshiaki Koizumi: One of the best things about being able to develop a Mario game, is that the very concept of a Mario game is free and open. Super Mario Galaxy director Yoshiaki Koizumi. IGN: Where did the inspiration for the spherical worlds and the idea of gravity come from? Yoshiaki Koizumi: That original Mario 128 tech demo was really where most of the inspiration started. This type of co-op play is not something I've really seen before, and I think we found a particularly good implementation in the game. Actually, the one thing I wanted to communicate is the possibilities for co-op play, in the form of Co-Star mode. IGN: What do you think is the one thing about Mario Galaxy that you're most proud of? Yoshiaki Koizumi: Oh, just being able to make Galaxy at all. So what was Mario shooting water in Sunshine to change the environment or defeat enemies, is now picking up and shooting starbits. We wanted to have the idea to shoot something at the environments to make a change or to pick something up. Yoshiaki Koizumi: That spraying concept actually exists in Super Mario Galaxy, where the player has the ability to pick up and shoot star bits during the game. IGN: Did you ever consider going back to some of the specific gameplay mechanics you created in Super Mario Sunshine for Super Mario Galaxy? Spraying water seems like a perfect fit for the pointing function of the Wii remote. But when I first heard of the Wii and its different controls, I realized that shaking the controller would be so much easier and a much better implementation. For example, in our first planning session, we had Mario's spin move, but at the beginning since we were planning for a GameCube game I imagined using spinning the analog stick for this move. IGN: Since the project started even before the Wii system and its controls were finalized, did the game evolve to match what the Wii ended up becoming? Yoshiaki Koizumi: Yes, a lot of the ideas were conceived before I even heard of the Wii. We started small ith a prototype, and we struggled with the idea with how best to use spherical worlds and how best to express that you're in space, and it just started to snowball from there. We finally had the opportunity with Super Mario Galaxy. For the longest time the idea kept bouncing around, and we kept trying to find a place to employ the spherical world idea in a game. Remember the Mario 128 demonstration? Where there were 128 Marios walking around on a flat surface? We originally wanted to make that surface a sphere but the team didn't have the chance to do that at the time. Miyamoto saw these tests, he finally said, 'Okay, let's do it.' And that was the start of what eventually became Super Mario Galaxy. I thought we could use this concept on GameCube, so a lot of the early tests had Mario walking around a globe of the Earth, over mountains and things like that.
